Why is Herefordshire so good for artisan drinks?
Herefordshire has an abundance of distilleries that produce small-batch artisan spirits. The county has some of the richest farmland in the country. This lends itself to growing the ingredients needed to create some of the finest spirits. These producers celebrate the provenance of the land. They grow herbs and hedgerows and turn them into artisan botanicals.
We’ve hand-picked our favourite drinks producers and distilleries within the area…
Which drinks distilleries should I visit in Herefordshire?
Start your drinks tasting tour in Herefordshire:
- Chase Distillery
Visit the field-to-bottle distillery at the world renowned Chase. Their drinks are made entirely from scratch and you can book their distillery tours and finish up with a G&T in the bar.
- Foxtail Distillery
They create premium small-batch gin made with botanicals that are foraged from their garden and surrounding hedgerows and woodland, so they’re truly inspired by the Herefordshire countryside. You can book on to their Gin Experiences and join your own Gin Masterclass.
- Black Mountain Botanicals
A brilliant gin making experience in the Black Mountains of Herefordshire, where you can learn to make one of their HillBilly gins.
Which drinks distilleries should I visit in Wales?
- Penderyn Distillery
If whisky is your tipple, we’d recommend visiting Penderyn, which has a distillery in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons (and has a shop on Llandudno Lloyd St in North Wales). Take part in a masterclass and go on a tour to see the mill, stills and end at the tasting bar where you can try their variety of single malt whiskies, spirits and casks.
- Silver Circle Distillery
Located in Wye Valley, an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. They hand make craft spirits – gin, vodka, ready-made artisan cocktails – and you can go on a distillery tour and make your own gin.
It’s also worth mentioning a few local distilleries that are producing outstanding spirits but don’t have visitor centres. If you’re keen to try their products and are planning on being in the area, why not give them a ring and see if you can pay them a visit.
- Penrhos Spirits in Herefordshire Marshes
On the border between England and Wales and they distill gin, rum and non-alcoholic spirits.
- Haven Distillery
A micro distillery, so it’s a bit on the smaller side, but try their delicious Sly Gin, a London dry gin made with home-grown herbs.
- Hay Distillery
They have a Wild Knapp Gin made in Hay on Wye
- Gattertop Drinks Company in the Herefordshire hills
Making naturally flavoured botanical vodka.
